I don't think he was bad last night. The 24 got caught in (or caused - not interested in differentiating right now) an incident that cost him two-plus laps and knocked him back to 36th. He worked his way back to 23rd. Not a bad night, all things considered.

Race was great. Best race I've ever watched and plenty of action every second . Can't wait to watch again next week. I'm pumped.

88 team Brought the same Brake package, They ran at Martinsville. From what he said in this article.

"I got them talked into going to a different master cylinder for a little softer pedal at Martinsville," Earnhardt said. "And then we brought it here, and you are on the brake pedal so far down in the corner that it just cooked the front [brakes] and I'd get a real soft pedal pretty quick. I had a great [last] restart, and I ran really great for one lap and the pedal went back to the floor -- I just had to pump it up all the way down the straightaway and I didn't have any front brakes getting into the corner so I couldn't get in real hard [because] it would just get loose locking the rears up."

    Sorry I had to.

Anyways, okay race as a fan of Kasey Kahne and Dale Jr but as a fan of racing first, last night was a snoozer for the most part. I'm not sure what the deal is with Richmond but it seems to be very hot and cold as of late when it comes to good racing. When the racing is on, its ON there but my lord it can get pretty damn boring as well. But I'd take a boring race at a Short Track like Richmond over a somewhat 'exciting' race at Kansas or Texas. Awesome to see Kasey and JR in the top 5 though. 3 weeks in a row they've both been inside the top 10, as a fan of both those drivers its been a loooong time since they both have ran that well at the same time.

Just curious, how old is the asphalt at Richmond? I know they used to seal the track every year, but IIRC, they haven't done that in quite some time, and I can't at all recall an actual repave of the track. Is it still the original 1988 surface?

Why did they stop sealing it altogether, anyway? Seem to remember it giving off a real thick yellow tire smoke.

    Repaved before 2004 season.

RIR Re-paving Update: The repaving of Richmond International Raceway is one step from completion. For the first time in the 15-year history of the 0.75-mile oval, the surface was demolished in October to install a new drainage system and new asphalt. The bulk of the work is finished, but the last layer of pavement will be applied when the temperatures increase. The asphalt will cure better with warmer weather. RIR President Doug Fritz said there was no timetable for finishing the job. "There's no need to risk putting the asphalt down with the cold temperatures, so we'll just wait until the first good stretch of warm days and warm nights in the spring," he said.(Richmond Times Dispatch)(12-14-2003)

The reason we don't remember the re-paving is because there was no progressive banking installed.

Hopefully it stays that way. I will lose all hope in NASCAR if they add gimmick banking to my home track.

If I recall the rules correctly, reguardless of you being the leader, and choosing the outside lane, you still cannot start the race and/or beat the inside car to the line. Though Tony spun his tires and Carl beat Stewart to the line, Carl obviously started the race which is breaking the rules. So NASCAR was right.

Doesn't matter if you're on the inside or outside, the leader is first to the line. Either way, Carl went before the box, so it's irrelevant if he was the leader or not.
