The second golf major of the year is upon us. The 117th U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Erin Hills, Wisconsin.

It started with over 9,000 golfers from all over the world, now its down to just 156 professionals and amateurs who will attempt to take on Erin Hills, which will host its first U.S. Open next week.

Last year Dustin Johnson overcame a bizarre penalty during the final round to win his first major championship by three strokes over 2003 winner Jim Furyk, Scott Piercy and Shane Lowry. This year he returns not only as defending champion, but also as Number 1 in the World.

For the first time since the 1994 Masters, one of golfs major championships may be contended without two of its star players, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Woods who is recovering from back surgery will miss his sixth major in a row, and unless of a delay, Mickelson, who will be attending his daughter's high school graduation, will miss his first major championship since the 2009 Open Championship. Mickelson has never won the U.S. Open, the only major he's yet to add to his résumé, but has finished runner-up six previous times.

He sits just one back with overnight co-leaders, Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka. The other co-leader, Paul Casey, shot 3-over par, 75.

Six golfers were added to the U.S. Open field today. Chris Wood, of England, earned his spot by being in the Top 60 Official World Golf Rankings by this weekends cut-off. Also Grégory Bourdy, of France, Whee Kim, of South Korea, Tyler Light, Davis Love IV and Ryan Palmer, all from the United States claimed the last few vacant spots in the field.

Also Phil Mickelson has not "officially" withdrawn yet, so there'll probably be another alternate added sometime this week, probably before Phil's scheduled tee time Thursday.
