Got the error tonight. Was wanting to know if anyone has tried the Penny trick. I have opened my 360 before to replace the DVD drive so my warranty is void. Tomorrow night should be fun when i attempt my repair.

I got E71 the other day after my screen scrambled. It kept freezing no matter how many times I restarted. I even got the Red Ring of Death, but I turned it off and back on and it loaded again. It still kept freezing. Part of the troubleshooting was to see if the error occurs without the hard drive attached, so the night after I tried playing without the hard drive and I ended up playing 2 hours no problem. I reattached the hard drive and have had no issues since... kinda weird if you ask me.


What's the penny trick you speak of?

seems a little easy to me lol

My guess is that when the thermal paste wears away MS used so much that the GPU and heatsink stop touching. When this happens right away the GPU will start to overheat.

Gonna test a few things tomorrow i'll let you know how it goes.
