I was recommended this little utility on another forum, where the kind folks helped remove a nasty malware problem.

You just install it, run it once, and update it once a week. It doesn't run in the background, but it blocks all sorts of nasties from downloading themselves onto your computer to begin with.

How does it not run in the background and still protect your computer?

I installed it last night, and it seems good, but that link didn't really answer my question.
I understand what it is doing, but if the program is closed down and not running in the background, how will it protect me from anything?

It writes bogus entries into the registry so that when the adware trys to install, it looks & "sees" that it is "already installed" Thus, it doesnt install & you are free of spyware.
Pretty interesting technique. That same site has a good program called Spywareguard I have used for over 2 years & I can highly recommend that as well.
